Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Data Recovery?

    Data Recovery consists of complex methods to restructure lost data from your media, and should only be performed by our trained professionals.
  • What is Evaluation?

    Evaluation is an extensive analysis of your media, to determine:
    • Whether the problems are physical (hardware malfunction), or logical (corrupted data or structure), or the both;
    • Physical readability of the media (we recover your data from the copy, keeping your media untouchable, unless you require to fix your media in-place);
    • Whether rebuild of the media structure required and possible;
    • Whether the media data is corrupted, and how much?
    • Whether recovery is recommended, and an estimate of time, cost and result.
  • How long does data recovery take?

    Every drive evaluates immediately upon receipt, and most recoveries are completed within 1-3 business days after receiving approval from customer. This time directly related with how big the media volume is (time to make a copy of it), how much it is physically damaged (bad sectors slower the copy process and lower uncorrupted data percentage), how much the data has corrupted by other recovery utilities and technicians, how uncommon this media is (to find required hardware and drivers in case they were not supplied by you) etc.
  • How much data can be retrieved from damaged media?

    From our experience, about 80-90% of data can be retrieved uncorrupted from damaged media, depending on sevirity of the problem.
  • My data contains confidencial information. How can I be sure they will remain confidential?

    Please, see our Non Disclosure Agreement for details.
  • How do I ship my hard drive to you?

    We recommend that you follow these guidelines:
    1. Wrap the media in an anti-static bag or material.
    2. Pack the media in a box twice its size. Use foam or bubble wrap to secure and protect the media. Do not use peanuts for this purpose. Be sure, the media doesn't move from the middle of the box.
    3. Include printed Submittal Form(s) in your shipment
    4. Ship your package to Active Data Recovery @ Toronto.

  • What if my media has a manufacturer warranty?

    If any warranty seals must be broken, we will advise if we have authorization. Nothing will be done to void your media warranty, without your explicit approval.
  • Do you restore encrypted files created in NTFS5?

    Yes, but we need either Administrator's logon, or User's login and password to be able to recover it.
  • Can you restore my data if Partition Table of my hard disk drive is corrupted or unreadable?

    More likely - yes. We need to evaluate hard disk first.
  • Do I have to provide all hard disk drives of my RAID if just one of them is corrupted?

    Yes, you have to send us all the disks of the RAID.
  • What partition formats do you support?

    Currently, we recover from the following partition formats: FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5. Support of the other formats is coming.
  • What type of NTFS do I have?

    If you use Windows 2000/XP/.NET or Windows NT4 with Service Pack 4 and up, then you have NTFS5, otherwise NTFS.
  • What does Defragmentation mean?

    Any data you see as logically one piece, physically can be divided on pieces and saved in different locations on a media, and then it takes time to load this data back so in some time it looks like your computer started to work slower - it takes more time to start a program or load some file. Defragmentation can put these pieces one by one in the media taking less time then to load the data.
  • Can I bring my broken media to you instead of using a courier post?

    Yes, you can bring hard drive directly to our laboratory at address:

  • Can you put my restored data back to the media I send to you?

    We offer a wide variety of media which we can return your valuable data on. Although we can usually return your data on the same hard drive / floppy that it was submitted on, we highly recommend that we return your data on a different hard drive or floppy, or ideally, a media which is much more difficult to corrupt, such as a CD or DVD.
    If you are submitting a hard drive because the data loss was global, such as where the hard drive was unrecognisable to the system due to a logical error, we can usually repair the damage to the hard drive, but there is a high probability that the drive can be damaged in the same way some time after restoration. If the hard drive is physically damaged it is not worth the cost to repair the damage, when your data can be transferred to a non damaged unit. In most cases, repairing a hard drive with physical damage is much more expensive than replacing it with a newer, more reliable unit.
